What Does A Typical Day In Rehab Look Like?

Taking the initial steps to enroll in rehab for drug and alcohol dependency can be daunting. Many individuals might be acknowledging their problem for the first time and may feel uncertain about the types of programs and people they will meet during treatment. There might also be concerns about being away from work and family. If you or a loved one are thinking about entering a treatment center, here’s an overview of what you might experience on a daily basis.
Residential Treatment

Residential Treatment

At Sunrise Recovery, the residential treatment program aims to stabilize and enhance the overall functionality of patients’ lives. To start, patients must be free from substances; those who are still using will first need to undergo detoxification. This process can take anywhere from a few days to over a week. In some cases, patients may transfer from an external detox facility to Sunrise, subject to approval by the Medical Director. The standard length of the residential treatment program is 30 days, though the actual duration for each patient may vary based on their individual needs and conditions.

Morning – Wake Up and Breakfast

Rehab programs are meticulously structured to provide a balance between a strict schedule and personal time. While procedures can vary by facility, many centers enforce a consistent wake-up time each day. This routine helps patients establish healthy habits and ensures that everyone can have breakfast together, maintaining a synchronized schedule. Since sleep is not part of the treatment, expect early mornings.
Facilities often use this time to check vitals and conduct medical assessments. Following this, patients typically have breakfast in a communal cafeteria or dining area. After breakfast, many centers offer some free time for patients to engage in personal activities, such as returning to their room, reading, walking, exercising, or socializing.

Early Afternoon – Group or Individual Therapy

In many treatment centers, the early afternoon is a period focused on intensive therapy. This time often includes both group and individual therapy sessions. Patients will typically be assigned to either group therapy blocks or individual sessions with their assigned clinicians.

Group Therapy

During group therapy, patients gather with one or more therapists or counselors to explore various aspects of the recovery process. Topics covered may include 12-step programs, SMART Recovery Program, seeking safety, family dynamics, the nature of addiction, and strategies for managing cravings. While it might seem daunting to address personal issues in a group setting, many patients find common ground in shared experiences and perspectives. At Sunrise, patients participate in at least 21 hours of group therapy each week. This setting promotes openness and honesty, provides opportunities to support others in recovery, and fosters a sense of camaraderie. Although it may be challenging initially, sharing experiences can lead to emotional healing and lasting friendships that extend into recovery.

Individual Therapy

In the afternoons, patients also engage in individual therapy, which can be a central component of their treatment. This one-on-one time with a therapist allows for in-depth exploration and personal recovery work essential for long-term sobriety. Each session is conducted privately between the patient and their assigned therapist. At Sunrise, patients are assured a minimum of 2 hours of individual therapy each week, with the frequency determined by the medical director. Topics in individual therapy can include:
  • Personal history
  • Mental health care (including dual diagnosis)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT )
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • CBT is a particularly valuable tool in addiction treatment, as it helps patients identify and address specific personal triggers for substance abuse. By recognizing these triggers, therapists work with patients to develop healthier responses and challenge negative thought patterns. These sessions encourage patients to discuss their deepest insecurities and fears, which, although potentially difficult, can lead to significant benefits.

Afternoon – Lunch & Group Activities

Social interaction and quality meals are both vital aspects of the rehab experience. Lunch is often a communal affair, providing an opportunity for patients to connect and learn about one another outside of therapy sessions. Meal schedules and menus vary among facilities, but staff typically strive to offer a nutritious and varied selection. At Sunrise Recovery, lunch is served at 11:45 AM, and patients can request snacks and water from staff throughout the day.
After lunch, patients usually enjoy a break from traditional therapy. Many facilities offer alternative activities such as music therapy, fitness sessions, or other enrichment opportunities. These activities aim to add some enjoyment and relaxation to the recovery process. Some centers also feature lectures, seminars from guest speakers, or special events like performances or visits from local sports celebrities. Following these activities, patients often participate in additional group or individual therapy sessions tailored to address issues raised earlier in their treatment.

    Evening – Dinner and Meeting

At Sunrise, dinner is served at 5:00 PM. After enjoying a meal in the cafeteria or dining area, many treatment centers organize a 12-step or similar structured meeting. These meetings generally follow an open format, allowing patients to share their thoughts voluntarily. This might include storytelling, providing feedback on activities, offering advice, asking questions about treatment, and more. These sessions create a supportive environment for patients to relax, reflect on the day’s experiences, and connect with peers. Following the meeting, patients are encouraged to go to bed at a reasonable hour and have time to shower and attend to personal hygiene needs.

    Intensive Outpatient

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a primary treatment option often recommended by clinicians for individuals who are newly sober or need ongoing support after starting rehab. IOP is suitable for those who do not require medically supervised detox or for individuals who have completed a detox and residential treatment program. This program allows patients to manage their daily responsibilities—such as work, social activities, and family obligations—while attending therapy sessions.
At Sunrise Rehab, the intensive outpatient program is designed to be more comprehensive than standard outpatient therapy. It is typically recommended for individuals transitioning from Sunrise’s detoxification and residential treatment programs. The IOP sessions take place in the outpatient services building, operating from 8 AM to 10 PM. The schedule and criteria are as follows:
  • Sessions occur for at least 3 hours per day, at least 3 days per week.
  • The content of sessions is determined by need and may include:
      • Individual therapy
      • Family therapy
      • Crisis intervention
      • Rehabilitation services
      • Case management services
      • SMART Recovery
Session times are organized into blocks:
  • 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
  • During their time in intensive outpatient care, patients receive an individualized treatment plan and have access to a range of professionals, including behavioral health experts, psychiatrists, nurses, and drug and alcohol counselors. Outside of Sunrise facilities, patients can contact staff according to the On Call Corporate Policy.

    Therapy and Counseling

In rehab, patients will participate in various types of therapy. These sessions focus on exploring triggers for substance use, self-destructive thinking, family dynamics, and more. The goal is to enhance self-esteem and develop the skills necessary for long-term addiction management.

    Educational Programs

Educational programs in rehab are designed to deepen understanding of addiction and the ongoing effort required to maintain sobriety. These programs cover a range of topics and may include presentations by guest speakers.

    Nutrition Planning

Physical health is crucial for sustaining sobriety, and a balanced diet plays a key role in this. With organized meal schedules and nutritious food options, patients learn about balanced nutrition and experience its benefits firsthand. Proper nutrition and hydration support stress relief and emotional regulation, aiding in both physical and mental recovery. Meals are designed to be rich in vitamins and minerals while minimizing refined sugars and saturated fats.

    Fitness

Many holistic treatment centers include structured exercise programs or provide facilities for patients to work out during their free time. Exercise is beneficial for managing cravings, enhancing mood, and helping to stabilize brain function.

    Support Group Meetings

Support group meetings, held outside of regular therapy sessions, offer a more informal setting for patients to express themselves. Following the 12-step model, these meetings provide a secure and structured space for individuals to share their experiences, offer mutual support, and build connections with others in recovery.

    Family Programs

There are various ways for families to engage in the recovery process. Some treatment centers offer family therapy sessions that relatives can attend on-site, while others provide educational programs outside the facility to help family members, friends, and community members better understand addiction.
