When fans tune in to watch the Las Vegas Raiders face off against the Kansas City Chiefs, they cheer as tight end Darren Waller sprints to the end zone, scoring touchdowns. Yet behind his success on the field lies a story of resilience—Waller nearly lost his football career to addiction.
Today, Darren Waller channels his experiences as a recovering addict to inspire Las Vegas youth to steer clear of drugs and alcohol.
Who is Darren Waller?
Reflecting on his high school years in Georgia, Waller recalls being labeled as “rowdy” and “disruptive” in the classroom. However, football gave him a sense of purpose. Despite his passion for the sport, Waller began abusing opioids, marijuana, and alcohol during his sophomore year, gradually losing interest in what he loved, including football.
While struggling with addiction in private, Waller continued to dominate on the field. By his senior year, his talent attracted the attention of Georgia Tech, where he committed to play as a receiver.
In 2015, Waller was drafted in the 6th round by the Baltimore Ravens. Yet his addiction overshadowed the moment, as his focus remained on his next high rather than his achievements.
Waller’s Journey Through Addiction and Recovery
The NFL enforces a strict zero-tolerance substance abuse policy, with disciplinary measures ranging from fines and suspensions to banishment from the League. Violations involving steroids can result in unpaid suspensions and even criminal charges, while recreational drug use follows a tiered system of penalties.
2016 Season
Waller’s NFL career began with challenges. Instead of making his mark on the field during his rookie season in 2016, he missed the first four games due to a violation of the League’s substance abuse policy.
Former teammate Steve Smith Sr. noted that Waller seemed indifferent to the consequences of his failed drug tests. Despite being allowed to play later in the season, his performance remained unremarkable.
2017 Season
The following year, Waller’s struggles continued. In June 2017, he again violated the League’s substance abuse policy, resulting in a suspension without pay for at least one year.
A Turning Point
In August 2017, Waller ingested prescription pills laced with fentanyl and passed out in his car for hours. This near-death experience served as a wake-up call. Aware of the looming headlines about his addiction, he took a decisive step toward recovery, admitting himself to a treatment program in Maine.
During rehab, Waller focused on overcoming his addiction while rebuilding his physical and mental health.
A New Chapter
After completing treatment, Waller returned to Georgia, finding work at a local grocery store. Free from substances and at peace with himself, he embraced his new life—ready to face the future, even if football was no longer part of it.
2018 Season
After serving a year-long suspension, Darren Waller was reinstated in the NFL in 2018. Initially joining the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, he was later signed by the Las Vegas Raiders in November.
His career gained momentum in 2019 when the Raiders offered him a four-year contract extension, solidifying his role on the team for the years ahead.
Giving Back to the Community
Drawing from his personal struggles and journey through recovery, Waller dedicates himself to helping Las Vegas youth steer clear of drugs and alcohol.
According to data from SAMHSA, approximately 138,000 youths in Las Vegas face substance use disorders, with nearly 30% engaging in binge drinking.
Through the Darren Waller Foundation, he inspires kids and teens to seek healthier ways to find fulfillment, emphasizing that drugs and alcohol are not the solution.
