Poems About Heroin Addiction to Read During Inpatient Rehab

“Welcome to Hell” tells the story of a woman reflecting on her two-decade-long battle with addiction. She expresses a deep regret for not understanding earlier how profoundly addictive drugs can be, and how opiates eventually came to dominate her life. She feels she has failed as a parent and admits that addiction has a firm grip on her, leaving her too exhausted to continue fighting. She resigns herself to the belief that she will be an addict for the rest of her life.

Welcome to Hell

By Nelly Barnes (Published: February 2011)

Welcome to Hell, where dreams decay, A ticket to nowhere, life led astray. Just hop on board, forget the cost, In a drug-fueled haze, all is lost.
Imagine a beach, sun shining bright, But it’s needles and spoons, no respite. At 14, a girl is led astray, In a nightmare she can’t escape.
Drugs over children, morals fade, Life becomes a desperate trade. Nanny buys diapers, Mommy gets high, Daddy hits, the children cry.
Years of bliss, but kids are taken, Mommy’s a crook, dignity forsaken. Jail cells and cold hearts remain, Addiction’s grip, endless pain.
Welcome to Hell, next stop—death, Dreams and kids lost with every breath. Addiction’s friend, till the end, Life traded, no chance to mend.
This poem explores the gradual descent from recreational drinking to full-blown alcoholism. The author recounts his youthful days spent enjoying the bar scene and weekend festivities. Over time, his drinking habits escalated until he found himself intoxicated most of the time. It’s a somber reflection on a life nearly lost to alcohol, but ultimately, it’s a story of perseverance and sobriety triumphing in the end.

A Boozer’s Advice

By Anton Plevin (Published September 2013)

If you booze, you lose, they say, I didn’t believe that back in the day. It started with weekends, just for fun, Then weekdays came, I couldn’t outrun.
Hangovers grew longer, memories blurred, Rock bottom hit, self-esteem slurred. The next drink was all that mattered, Till my life lay in tatters.
Getting dry was tough to do, With sweats, shakes, and a recovery overdue. Slowly, life became less of a mess, Now I can share this, nonetheless.
Beware the trap, it’s sly and slick, What starts as fun can make you sick. Not everyone falls, it’s true, But heed this advice from me to you.
Through an addict’s eyes, I see, Those drunken days made me wise. It’s up to you to safely booze, Not everyone has to lose.
The last poem highlights the courage needed to face the hardest battle of your life. How brave are you? I believe you possess the same inner resolve to overcome drug abuse as this determined author. You just need to find it within yourself. Let this poem, about unyielding determination and the drive to stop abusing drugs, inspire you to make a positive change today. You don’t have to remain an addict, but you will have to work hard at it every day.

Shut My Eyes

By Leon (Published: November 2013)

When I close my eyes, I shut out the pain, Turning inward, Feeling the shame.
Trying for perfection, Struggling inside, Battling demons, I must find my guide.
The fight is tough, When the enemy’s me, Bound by shame, I seek to be free.
I’ve tried and failed, Should I give in, Let darkness win, Or rise and begin?
I choose to fight, To make things right, Forge a better world, Face the night.
With hope as my guide, I’ll rise above the pain, Reborn, with wings to unfurl, Everything to gain.
Can you relate to the experiences described by the authors in these heroin addiction poems? Do you still struggle with self-doubt about your ability to overcome the habit for good? The authors also felt lost and came to realize that continuing down the path of addiction would mean losing everything that mattered to them.
