ToggleReflecting on Our Role as a Society
Recent global events have prompted many of us to reconsider who we want to be as individuals, communities, and society as a whole. In times like these, we are reminded to slow down and be present for both ourselves and others, taking time to notice what truly matters.
The Power of a Compassionate Question
Imagine if a simple, empathetic question could make a difference in someone’s life. It can. At Sunrise Recovery, our focus is on listening with empathy and asking questions that matter. Every day, about 3,000 people reach out to us, and we make it a point to ask everyone if they are experiencing thoughts of suicide. Regardless of the reason they reach out, we ask this life-saving question to ensure that no one struggling with such thoughts feels judged or unsupported.
The Research on Asking About Suicide
Research shows that asking someone clearly and compassionately if they are having suicidal thoughts does not increase the risk of suicide. Instead, it demonstrates care and can help someone seek the support they need. Importantly, you don’t need to be a mental health professional to have this vital conversation. Anyone can ask these questions and potentially make a difference in the lives of those around them.
Breaking the Silence on a Difficult Conversation
Talking about suicide can be intimidating, but this is what makes it so essential. By breaking the silence and approaching the topic with love and care, you can help someone close to you who might feel ashamed to bring it up themselves. Your courage can inspire others to find their own strength.
Honoring World Suicide Prevention Day
On World Suicide Prevention Day, we remember those lost to suicide, hold their loved ones close in our thoughts and recognize the professionals dedicated to preventing this public health issue. The statistics are stark: in 2022, nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide, with over 10 million seriously considering it. Suicide remains the second leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 14, and 25 to 34, and veterans face a suicide rate 50 percent higher than the general population.
Addressing Suicide Risk with Accessible Mental Health Care
Access to timely mental health care is crucial for suicide prevention. Unfortunately, many face barriers to receiving it. In 2021, less than half of adults with mental health needs received the care they required, and nearly 70 percent of children were unable to find appropriate treatment. Expanding access to quality, affordable care is central to reducing suicide rates.
Expanding Mental Health Care
The American Rescue Plan provided $12 billion to improve mental health services across states, communities, and schools. The expansion of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics and easier access to mental health services in schools are vital steps toward addressing the youth mental health crisis. Additionally, new resources have been allocated to support law enforcement and first responders facing trauma, as well as expanded counseling services for veterans and their families.
Prioritizing Veteran Mental Health
Supporting the mental health of veterans is a national priority. Efforts include expanded access to confidential mental health treatment, the hiring of more mental health professionals, and the removal of cost-sharing for initial mental health visits. By investing in mental health resources and permanent housing solutions for veterans, we are working to ensure they have the support they need to thrive.

Sunrise Emphasis
Sunrise Recovery focuses on integrating medical and psychological care to address suicide risk comprehensively. The facility emphasizes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), a method that combines medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to manage substance use disorders, which are often linked to suicidal thoughts (SAMHSA).
