In Memory of Mac Miller

In Memory of Mac Miller

Mac Miller, a rapper and multi-instrumentalist, made his debut in the rap world at just 17 and quickly rose to national fame. Tragically, his life was cut short in September 2018. Despite his brief career, Miller released five albums and numerous mixtapes, while also producing for artists like SZA and Vince Staples under the alias Larry Fisherman.
Though his legacy is still evolving, Miller redefined what it meant to be an independent artist in an industry dominated by major labels.
Malcolm McCormick was born on January 19, 1992, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By the age of six, he had already learned to play guitar, drums, piano, and bass. According to the Pittsburgh City Paper, Miller was exposed to a wide range of music from an early age, enjoying everything from Bob Marley to The Beatles and A Tribe Called Quest.
Miller’s musical focus eventually shifted toward hip-hop. In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he remarked, “Once I hit 15, I got real serious about it, and it changed my life completely. I used to be into sports, playing all the sports and going to all the high school parties. But once I realized hip-hop is almost like a job, that’s all I did.
At 15, he released his first mixtape under the name Easy Mac, titled But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy. By 2009, he had made a name for himself in the local rap scene with two subsequent mixtapes, The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown and The High Life, the latter featuring fellow Pittsburgh artist Wiz Khalifa on the track “Cruise Control.” It was around this time that he dropped the Easy Mac moniker and began going by Mac Miller.
In 2010, Miller signed with the independent label Rostrum Records and released his mixtape K.I.D.S., which brought him into the national spotlight. This project included several hit songs, such as “Nikes on My Feet,” “Senior Skip Day,” and “Kool-Aid & Frozen Pizza.”

Miller went on tour in 2011 and was featured in XXL’s 2011 “Freshman Class” of artists to watch, alongside talents like Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., and Meek Mill. That same year, he released his follow-up mixtape, Best Day Ever, which is regarded as one of his most successful projects and helped launch him into mainstream fame with tracks like “Best Day Ever” and “Donald Trump.”

Miller faced ongoing struggles with substance abuse throughout his career, experiencing intermittent periods of sobriety. However, his inability to maintain that sobriety ultimately had severe consequences.
On September 7, 2018, Miller was found dead due to “mixed drug toxicity,” involving fentanyl, alcohol, and cocaine.
In his album GO:OD AM, Miller addressed the risk of an early death from drug use in his song “Brand Name,” where he expressed:
To everyone who sell me drugs / Don’t mix it with that bulls**t / I’m hoping not to join the 27 Club.
Miller was 26 at the time of his death.
His final album, Swimming, received a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
Shortly before his passing, Miller visited the National Public Radio office to promote his album, performing for their Tiny Desk Concert series.
Following Miller’s passing, a memorial concert titled “Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life” took place at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, featuring performances by artists such as Chance the Rapper, Travis Scott, J.I.D, and others. The proceeds from ticket sales were donated to the Mac Miller Circles Fund, a foundation dedicated to providing programming, resources, and opportunities for youth in underserved communities, helping them realize their full potential through arts exploration and community building.
Miller’s life was marked by numerous highs and lows, and although it ended tragically, he left behind hundreds of songs and significantly influenced many artists who will continue to carry on his legacy.
