Heartbroken Lafayette Mother Shares Story of Losing Her Son to Fentanyl

Heartbroken Lafayette Mother Shares Story of Losing Her Son to Fentanyl

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Brandy Girouard is grappling with the devastating loss of her 25-year-old son, Gage Smith, who passed away on October 2 from a fentanyl overdose. The experience, she says, has been one of the most challenging of her life.
“We’re heartbroken. Loving an addict, you always know this could be your reality, but you never think it will happen to you,” Girouard shared.
In September, Girouard received the tragic news that Gage had suffered an apparent fentanyl overdose. He was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Lafayette but passed away a few days later. Gage’s funeral took place on October 7, and his family continues to struggle with the pain of living without him.
“We’re just trying to navigate a reality without him. Some days it feels like it happened yesterday, other days it feels like it’s been years,” Girouard explained.
Gage is survived by his fiancée, Jordan Gill, and their two daughters, Blakeleigh and Emberleigh Smith. Despite the profound grief, Girouard finds comfort in knowing that Gage is now at peace. She described him as someone with a “heart of gold” who lived to bring joy to others.
“One thing I’ll always remember is how deeply he loved everyone—his family, his children. He was a wonderful person. He was almost 26, but to me, he was still my kid,” she reflected.
Girouard, who now advocates for fentanyl awareness, urges others to educate themselves about the dangers of drugs. She also advises parents to love their children through their struggles.
“Love them through it. Remind them they’re loved, that they deserve love, and that their addiction doesn’t define who they are,” she said.
